***STEVE LOCK - READ*** |
Sorry this is late, but worth putting up, tilehill.net.
Submitted by Debbie Whittingham:Debbie.Whittingham@wmfs.net
I was hoping you could help me share this as widely as possible within the Coventry area. We are holding several sessions across the West Midlands in support of one of our firefighters, Steve Lock, who has been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia and is undergoing chemotherapy and requires a bone marrow transplant. Attached is the publicity eflyer and PowerPoint provided by the Anthony Nolan Trust to publicise the Coventry session, which will be held on the 30th July between 1500 - 1900hrs. The sessions are open to all Brigade personnel and members of the community who meet the donor criteria. Please have a look at the eflyer and feel free to forward it to as many people as possible. The Anthony Nolan Trust need as many people as possible on their donor register, so please consider coming along to the session to join. The process to join the register is simple - you'll be given all the information you need about registering and donating if you are found to be a match for somebody, asked to fill in a short questionnaire which they'll discuss with you and then you'll give a small blood sample for testing. |

Post office Closures - submitted by Cllr. David Skinner.... |
For Residents
This is of enormous concern to many people. Cllr Foster, Cllr Lapsa and I were ourselves today at the Fletchampstead Post Office in Standard Avenue. We want it to stay open.
Coventry City Council believes plans to close down Post Offices in the city are taking away highly-valued community services that local people depend upon. Last month the Post Office revealed its plans to close 51 Sub Post Offices in the Coventry, Warwickshire and Birmingham region, as a part of national programme that will see 2,500 Post Offices closed in total. Four closures have been proposed in Coventry. The Council will be writing to the Post Office as part of it's consultation to oppose the plans and reflect the views of people in the city who don't want to lose these important community resources. Cllr Kevin Foster, Deputy Leader of the Council, said: "Post Offices have traditionally been at the heart of the community with local people, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, relying on the services they offer. "These proposed closures, together with the hammer blow of the pending closure of the Bishop Street sorting office, leave local people feeling, with some justification that Coventry does not matter to the Post Office or Royal Mail. We want to tell the Post Office through this consultation that their plans threaten to take away services that are held dear by local residents, with no plans to replace them." The latest proposals come just four years after the Post Office finished previous programmes of branch closures that have seen 21 Sub-Post Offices axed in Coventry since 1999. If the closures go ahead Coventry will be left with 39 Sub-Post Offices, compared to 64 just ten years ago. Cllr Foster added: "I would urge everyone who wants to make their views known to respond to the Post Office during this period of consultation." The consultation ends on August 4. Views should be sent to Mark Partington, Network Development Manager, C/O National Consultation Team, Freepost Consultation Team. Or email consultation@postoffice.co.uk

Cannon Park Major District Centre The Council has now received the planning application for a development. The application is being considered in the usual manner, but, in the meantime, the developers have carried out their own publicity prior to submitting their application. They will be displaying their plans in the Cannon Park shopping centre for two weeks, commencing TOMORROW, Thursday 17 July. The display will be manned from 10.00-16.00 (10.00am to 6.00pm) on 17th July but after that it will remain in the foyer, unmanned, for a further two weeks. This is outside my Ward, and, as a member of Planning Committee, I cannot comment in any way, but Westwood Ward residents may wish to view the exhibition.
Canley Regeneration There will be a walkabout to look at points of interest along Canley Brook. Residents are keen to see improvements along the corridor as part of the the regeneration scheme. The walkabout will be Tuesday 29 July, meet at 17.00 (5.00 pm) outside Charter Primary School, Mitchell Avenue. We plan a stroll along Wendiburgh Street and John Rous Avenue onto Templars Fields, weather permitting!D
Westwood Ward Forum
The next Ward Forum (Chairman, Cllr Nigel Lee) will be held at 19.00 (7PM) on 17 September 2008 at the Xcel Leisure Centre, Mitchell Avenue, Canley, Coventry, CV4 8DY. There will, as always, be a talk by the Police and a general discussion about any topical issues that residents may wish to raise. Please come if you can. E Bikeability Mr Tony Benn, Cycle Training Co-ordinator, Sustainable Transport, kindly tells me; "Bikeability is the new name for teaching children how to ride their bike safely. The national scheme billed as "cycle proficiency training for the 21st century" is very active in Coventry, and the City Council team of cycle instructors train one in three of the city's ten year olds. About 1300 children receive ten and a half hours of instruction each year.Courses focus on introducing children to riding safely on our roads. Pavement riding is dangerous and it's important that we support children in making their first steps in using our road systems. Cycling is a very environmentally friendly and a low cost form of transport and it helps to keep people fit and healthy. Cycling on our roads has to be done safely however, hence Bikeability. The course covers choosing quiet low-trafficked roads, making sure your bike is in good working order and practicing safe road riding. More details on the courses provided by Coventry City Council can be found on:- www.coventry.gov.uk/cycletrainingMany of the courses are available at schools as part of the school timetable. Schools such as Templars Primary, Lymbrick Wood Primary, Cannon Park Primary and The Westwood School all take part in the scheme. A full program of courses are being run in the school summer holidays including a two day course for children aged ten and above at Leigh Church of England School in Plantshill Crescent, Tile Hill on 6 and 7 August. For full details please contact the cycle training co-ordinator on 024 7683 2032"

Tile Hill Railway Station Car park.... |
For Residents I hear a lot about the problems of parking at the station and it was discussed at the recent Westwood Ward Forum. I am therefore delighted to forward this message from Mrs Bridges in CENTRO. Please give your views on the website, and please tell anyone else with whom you are in contact. Cllr. David Skinner Westwood Ward Members Support, Coventry City Council Council House, Earl Street Coventry, CV1 5RR TEL: 024
From: Susan Bridges: Tile Hill Rail Park and Ride Extension
Dear Councillor Centro is currently working on proposals to extend the Park and Ride facility at Tile Hill railway station. The existing car park is oversubscribed, to the extent that cars are parked illegally on footways and verges of the surrounding streets. This car park extension will help us to deliver a larger, fully accessible car park which would reduce the impact of parking on local streets, and encourage peak and off peak travel at this location. It will also help to meet the regions targets on modal shift. The proposal supports the requirements of the Coventry development Plan to improve public transport access at this location. The extension will be adjacent to the current car park and provide approximately 240 additional spaces. Additional features in the car park will include upgraded lighting, CCTV cameras and help points linked to the Network Safety and Security Centre and a potential footway link to Falkland Close. We are looking to gauge peoples' views about the car park extension prior to applying for planning permission later this summer. To do this we will be mailing the attached leaflet to residents and businesses in the area to make them aware of the proposals and to provide the opportunity for them to comment on the proposal. In addition posters and adverts will be placed in the local area encouraging people to visit the exhibitions on two dates at Tile Hill railway station on Wednesday 16th July and Saturday 19th July.
Information is also available at www.networkwestmidlands.com/tilehill and you can respond to the consultation on the website and leave any other comments there.

Developments - submitted by Cllr. David Skinner.... |
I am often asked about proposed building in or near our Ward, and the following is a partial roundup. The Tile Hill College site in Tile Hill Lane is attracting attention. The College itself is being demolished and approval has been given for the following; The Northern section of the site, to be developed by JS Bloor, will have 41 apartments and 90 houses. The Southern section of the site, to be developed by Accord Housing, will provide 60 apartments, 63 dwellings, 45 sheltered / care apartments and 17 sheltered / care bungalows. Mr Marcus Fothergill, Principal Planning Officer (South), tells me; "With regard to time scales, given the economic climate, it is difficult to speculate on completion, however I would suggest that 5 years would be a reasonable time for total completion of both schemes". Mr Fothergill's office on telephone 024 76831308 can give more detailed information if required. I also remind residents of the Warwick District Council exhibition about their possible building plans on Friday 20 June (10:00 - 19:00) at Cannon Park Shopping Centre, Coventry. Canley Regeneration is moving along well, with the very modern Xcel Centre in Mitchell Avenue opening soon. And Warwick University has ambitious plans for development. I yesterday (Saturday) heard the Vice-Chancellor himself stress the University's determination to be among the very best centres of learning in the entire world, so there is plenty going on in our general area. |

Tile Hill Village.... |
| submitted by Paul Houghton, local resident |
| Please find attached picture of Tile Hill Village and Tanyard Farm taken about 40 years ago. This was the farm in Tile Hill before Tanyard Farm estate was built. It is called Plants Hill Cresent wood on the corner of Hathaway Rd near to the petrol station and bank. Taken by Jon Bywater when he was about eight years old from a tree which he subsequently fell out and broke the camera. Gladly he survived to tell the tale. Please feel free to add it to your website. Best Regards Paul Houghton.

We shall be working in Torrington Avenue between Templar Avenue and Wolfe Road starting on 8th January 2008 for approximately three weeks.
